Franciotto Orsini (* 1473 in Rome ; † January 10, 1534 there ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the eldest son of Orso Orsini di Monteredondo and his wife Costanza Savelli. The Popes Cölestin III came from the Orsini family . , Nicholas III. and Benedict XIII. as well as a number of other cardinals. His uncle was Giovanni de ' Medici , who later became Pope Leo X. Franciotto Orsini was born Signore of Monterotondo . He received his training in Florence under Lorenzo il Magnifico de'Medici .

He took part in various military companies, including fighting against Cesare Borgia . Until her death, he was married to Violante Orsini di Mugnano and had five legitimate children and one child out of wedlock. After the death of his wife he entered the clergy, became a cleric of the diocese of Rome and an apostolic protonotary .

Orsini was created in the consistory on July 1, 1517 by Pope Leo X. to be cardinal deacon and on July 6 of the same year he was awarded San Giorgio in Velabro as a titular deaconry. Deposed in August 1519, he was later reinstated and was archpriest of the Vatican Basilica . After 1519 he was cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Cosmedin . He was a participant in the conclave 1521–1522 , in which Hadrian VI. when Pope was elected. He also took part in the 1523 conclave, from which Clement VII emerged as Pope. From 1524 to 1525 he was Bishop of Fréjus as administrator . In 1528 he was Bishop of Rimini as administrator .

He died in Rome and was buried in St. Peter's Basilica.
