Francis Macdonald Cornford

Francis Macdonald Cornford (born February 27, 1874 in Eastbourne , † January 3, 1943 in Cambridge ) was an important English classical scholar . He taught at Trinity College of Cambridge University , from 1931 as Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy .

Cornford attended St Paul's School in London and studied in Cambridge from 1893, where he was made a Fellow in 1899 . In both 1921 and 1928 he applied unsuccessfully for the Regius Chair in Greek Studies at Cambridge University. It was not until 1931 that he became the holder of the newly created Laurence Chair for Ancient Philosophy . Numerous works on Plato come from Cornford , including the important commentaries on Theaetetus and Sophistes as well as on Timaeus , but also works on the philosophy of religion. In 1937 he was elected a member of the British Academy .

Cornford was married to Frances Crofts Cornford (née Darwin), the granddaughter of Charles Darwin , since 1909 .
