Francis Vere Hampden Margesson, 2nd Viscount Margesson (born April 17, 1922 - November 11, 2014 ) was a British peer and non-party politician .

Life

Francis Vere Hampden Margesson, 2nd Viscount Margesson was born to Henry David Reginald Margesson, 1st Viscount Margesson (1890-1965) and his wife Frances Howard Leggett (1896-1977). The parents' marriage ended in divorce in 1940. Margesson's mother returned to the United States during World War II . She took her maiden name Leggett again and lived until her death in 1977 at the family estate in Ridgely , Maryland , she by her father Francis Howard Leggett (1840 to 1909), a New York wholesaler and close friend of the Indian monk Vivekananda had inherited . As a child, Margesson's mother had been blessed by Vivekananda; Francis Margesson's father was also blessed by Vivekananda as a child.

Francis Margesson attended Eton College in Berkshire . During the Second World War he was in the military from 1939 to 1945. He was a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve . He studied at Trinity College of Oxford University . From 1949 to 1953 he was director of the British publishing house Thames & Hudson Inc. in New York City . In 1956 he became the aide-de-camp of Sir John Woodall , then governor of the Bermuda Islands . From 1964 to 1970 he was an Information Officer at the British Consulate General in New York City.

With the death of his father on December 24, 1965 he inherited the title of 2nd Viscount Margesson of Rugby in the County of Warwick in the Peerage of the United Kingdom (created 1942). Margesson was the heir and owner of the “Vivekananda Retreat” in Ridgely, a spiritual center of the Indian Ramakrishna order . He had inherited the property where he lived with his wife and children from his mother in 1977. In 1997 he had sold the property to lay people of the Ramakrishna order.

Membership in the House of Lords

With the inheritance of the title of Viscount Margesson, Margesson became an official member of the House of Lords on December 24, 1965 . In the House of Lords he was listed as a non-party and non-attached. He was a formal member of the House of Lords from December 24, 1965 to November 11, 1999. He was not present during the 1997/98 session. The Hansard only records that Margesson took the oath of office as a member of the House of Lords on June 17, 1999 ; otherwise there are no further entries in the Hansard. His membership in the House of Lords ended on November 11, 1999 by the House of Lords Act 1999 . He did not run for election for one of the remaining seats.

He was not listed in the Register of Hereditary Peers , which are available for by-election. He was not a member of the Hereditary Peers Association .

Private

Margesson was married to Helena Backstrom, the daughter of Heikki Backstrom. His wife was from Oula in Finland . The marriage was concluded on September 18, 1958. The marriage had three children, a son and two daughters.

Margesson died in November 2014 at the age of 92. Heir to the title "Viscount Margesson" is his eldest son, the Hon. Richard Francis David Margesson (* 1960).
