Francis Ricciardone

Francis J. Ricciardone Jr. (* 1951 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is President of the American University in Cairo and a former US diplomat .

After graduating with Honors from Dartmouth College in 1973, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach in Italy . He went to Iran as a teacher in 1976 and traveled through Southwest Asia , Europe and the Middle East, and joined the US State Department in 1978 .

He has been President of the American University in Cairo since 2016 . From 2011 to 2014 Ricciardone was US Ambassador to Ankara , from 2005 to 2008 in Cairo , and before that in Manila and Palau (2002–2005). He was also an envoy at the US embassy in Kabul . During this time Ricciardone was on leave from the US State Department for a research stay at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP).

Ricciardone is married and has two daughters.
