Francisco Rezek

José Francisco Rezek (born  January 18, 1944 in Cristina , Minas Gerais ) is a Brazilian lawyer and diplomat . From 1983 to 1990 and from 1992 to 1997 he served as a judge at the Supremo Tribunal Federal , the Supreme Court of his home country, from 1990 to 1992 as Brazilian foreign minister and from 1997 to 2006 as a judge at the International Court of Justice .

Francisco Rezek was born in Cristina in 1944 and studied law at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte until 1967 . He then initially worked as a resident lawyer . After further studies, including at Harvard University and the Hague Academy for International Law , he received his doctorate in 1970 at the Sorbonne in Paris in the field of international law . He also holds a diploma in 1979 at the Wolfson College of the University of Oxford .

From 1971 to 1997 he worked as a professor of international law and constitutional law at the Universidade de Brasília , including from 1974 to 1976 as head of its legal department and from 1978/1979 as dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. From 1976 he also held a professorship for international law at the Instituto Rio Branco , Brazil's higher education institution for the training of diplomats . In 1986 he lectured at the Hague Academy of International Law.

From 1979 Francisco Rezek was Deputy Attorney General ( Subprocurador-Geral ) in his home country. He then worked from 1983 to 1990 as a judge at the Supremo Tribunal Federal , the Supreme Court of Brazil. From March 1990 to April 1992 he took over the post of Foreign Minister , after which he returned to the Supreme Court. From February 1997 he worked as a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague , his regular nine-year term ended in 2006. He has also been a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration since 1987 .
