Franciscus Omichius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franciscus Omichius , Latinized from Franz Omcken , also: Omke , Oemich , Oemichen , Oemichius , Oemeke (* around 1530 in Lippstadt ; † October 1591 in Güstrow ) was a German educator, rector and writer.

Live and act

Omichius was the son of the later Güstrow superintendent Gerd Omeken . According to ancient traditions, he is said to have completed his studies with Philipp Melanchthon at the University of Wittenberg . However, his name cannot be found in the university's register. From 1566 to 1572 he was vice rector and from 1572 rector of the cathedral school in Güstrow . At Easter 1573 he received his master's degree from the University of Rostock . In the winter semester of 1573/74 he was still matriculated in Rostock.

In 1576 he and his students performed the play Daniel at Güstrow Castle . In 1578 Jacob Lucius published his own play Ein neue Comoedia by Dionysii Syracusani and Damonis and Pythiae Brüderschracht. There is no evidence of a performance in Güstrow, but there is evidence of a performance in Berlin in 1580. Georg Mauritius the Younger (son of Georg Mauritius ) translated it into Latin in 1617 for a performance at the University of Altdorf . On the one hand, the piece is the first evidence of High German poetry in the Low German language area. On the other hand, it has a number of Low German scenes as interludes, the basic form of which does not come from Omichius himself, but which he borrowed from other poets, such as a buttress-pulling scene from the Claws Buer (1523) by Magister Bado von Minden and from the Hoffteufel des Johann Chryseus (1545).

As a theologian he took a strictly Lutheran stance, as his last work Christlyke unde eintföldige underwysinge vor de Junge Knaben im Schole , a kind of catechism , made clear.

His son of the same name enrolled at the University of Rostock in March 1601. He became a physician and professor at the University of Frankfurt an der Oder , where he was also rector in 1615.
