The district YSR , until 2010 district Kadapa (older spelling Cuddapah ) is a district of the Indian state Andhra Pradesh. The administrative seat is the city of Kadapa . On July 8, 2010, the district was renamed District YSR in honor of the head of government YS Rajasekhara Reddy (known as YSR), who was killed in an accident in the same year .

history

The district of Kadapa has been settled for a long time. The oldest traces of settlement date from pre-Christian times. For centuries, numerous dynasties alternated in rule in the region. The district in its current form was created as the British administrative district Cuddapah when it separated from Bellary in 1808. During the colonial era, it was part of the Madras presidency . From this, the federal state of the same name emerged after independence. Since the state of Madras was ethnically mixed, the Telugu-speaking residents of this state wanted a union of all Telugus-speaking residents of India in a separate state. In 1953, the state of Andhra was created from eleven former districts of Madras. In 1956, the Telugu-speaking part of the state of Hyderabad was added, and the current state of Andhra Pradesh was created.

geography

The district is located in the central south of Andhra Pradesh . The Kurnool district forms its northern borders . In the northeast it borders on the Prakasam district , in the east on the Nellore district , in the south on the Chittoor district and in the west on the Anantapur district .

The district has an area of 15,379 km². 5,003 km² are covered by forest; this corresponds to 32.6 percent of the total area of the district. The southwest is a highland with more moderate temperatures. The rest of the district consists of fertile lowlands.

The main rivers are the Pennar and its tributaries. The most important of these are the Cheyyair , the Chitravati , the Kundu , the Papagni and the Sagileru .

climate

The district's climate is characterized by hot summers and is generally dry, except during the monsoons. March to May is summer time with great drought and high temperatures. The southwest monsoon from the second week of June to the second week of October brings the most abundant rain. The subsequent northeast monsoon until the end of December brings somewhat lower, but still significant amounts of rain. The months of January and February are winter with cooler temperatures. The long-term average of rainfall is only 700 mm per year. The southwest monsoon brings 394 mm and the northeast monsoon 251 mm. Otherwise there will be little rain. This leads to the drying up of the cultivated areas in the dry season, which lasts from January to May. The coldest month is December (average 22.01 ° C; daily minimum 17 ° C; maximum 27 ° C), the warmest May (average 30.64 ° C; minimum 24 ° C; maximum 37 ° C). During the monsoon season there is a humidity of up to 80 percent. This falls to 30 percent in the dry period.

economy

Most of the working population is employed in agriculture. The main crops are sunflowers, peanuts, rice, citrus fruits, cotton and vegetables. In addition to agriculture, industry plays a subordinate role. In addition to cement factories, there are mainly stone processing companies. The district has numerous raw materials such as asbestos, barite, limestone, clay and the " Cuddapah Stone ", a black limestone that is used in building construction throughout South India.

population

The last census in 2011 counted 2,884,524 inhabitants. Of these, 1,454,136 were men (50.4 percent) and 1,430,388 women. In 2001 the Dalit numbered 409,492 (15.7 percent) and the Adivasi 61,371 (2.4 percent) people. In 2011, 983,736 people (34.10 percent of the total number of residents) lived in urban areas. So almost 2 out of 3 residents still live in the country. The vast majority of the YSR district's population speak Telugu as their first language. There are 1,225 inhabited villages in the entire district.
