Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore ( Telugu : శ్రీ అమరజీవి పొట్టి శ్రీరాములు నెల్లూరు జిల్లా) is one of 13 districts in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh . The administrative seat is the city of Nellore .
geography
The district is located in the southeast of Andhra Pradesh . It is framed in the west by the district of YSR , in the north by the district of Prakasam , in the east by the Bay of Bengal and in the south by the district of Chittoor and the state of Tamil Nadu . The coastline is 169 km.
The district has an area of 13,076 km² and is one of the medium-sized districts in Andhra Pradesh. Of the area, 2,519 km² (19.3 percent) are forested. The main rivers in the district are Pennar, Kandaleru, Swarnamukhi and Upputeru. Lake Pulicat lies on the southern border of the district. There are also several reservoirs in the Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district.
climate
The district's climate is characterized by hot summers and is generally dry, except during the monsoons. The climate is divided into four seasons. March to May is summer time with great drought and high temperatures. The southwest monsoon from early June to the second week of October brings the first heavy rain. The subsequent northeast monsoon until the end of December brings even greater amounts of rain. The months of January and February are winter with cooler temperatures. The long-term average of the amount of precipitation is 1095 mm per year. The southwest monsoon brings 337 mm and the northeast monsoon 665 mm of the annual rainfall. Otherwise there will be little rain. This leads to the drying up of the cultivated areas in the dry season, which lasts from January to May. The coldest month is December (average 23.39 ° C; daily minimum 19 ° C, maximum 28 ° C), the warmest May (average 32.42 ° C; minimum 26 ° C; maximum 38 ° C). The last census in 2011 counted 2,966,082 inhabitants. 1,493,254 of these were men (50.3 percent) and 1,472,828 women. In 2001 there were 587,157 (22.0 percent) Dalit and 242,257 (9.1 percent) Adivasi . In 2011, 862,309 people (29.07 percent of the total number of residents) lived in urban areas. Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase was only 11.15 percent between the last two censuses and is still significant in absolute terms. From 2001 to 2011 the population increased by almost 300,000 people. Significant places
The most populous town in the district is the main town of Nellore with around 380,000 residents. Other important cities with over 50,000 inhabitants are Kavali and Gudur .
economy
The majority of the population is employed in agriculture. Mainly rice, tobacco, sugar cane, sunflowers, tropical fruits (oranges and mangoes) and chilli are grown. In addition, fishing is an important industry. Hand weaving gives a lot of people an income. There are numerous small industrial companies in various branches throughout the district. In the cities, people live from trading in goods and services.
history
The district belonged to Madras State until October 1, 1953 . Then to Andhra State until 1956 . Since then, Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore has been an administrative unit in the then newly created state of Andhra Pradesh. The district was renamed in 2008 after the freedom fighter Potti Sriramulu . Until then, it had the same name as the main town, Nellore .

The district comprises 46 mandals (talukas) and 1,110 inhabited villages.
Politically, the district is now divided into the three tax districts of Gudur, Kavali and Nellore.
