Jacob Lucius the Elder , also Jacobus Lucius the Elder Ä. (* around 1530 in Kronstadt (Transylvania) ; † October 1597 in Helmstedt ) was a German draftsman , printer and newspaper publisher.

Life

Lucius was a Transylvanian Saxon by birth, as evidenced by his signature ILCT (Iacobus Lucius Coronensis Transsylvanus).

From 1556 he worked in Wittenberg as a draftsman for woodcuts . Towards the end of his time in Wittenberg, he switched to book printing . From 1564 he worked as an academic publisher in Rostock , also under the significant name Jacobus Siebenbürger . In October 1566 he was together with his colleagues Nicolaus Wegener and Theodorus Glestein (aka Dietrich Gloichstein) under the name " typogaphi " in the matrikel the University of Rostock one.

On November 21, 1578 Lucius was appointed by the Brunswick Duke Julius as the first university printer at the University of Helmstedt . In 1597 he died of the plague raging in the city .

His son Jacob Lucius the Younger continued his father's book printing trade.
