Franco Pacini
Franco Pacini (born May 10, 1939 in Florence , † January 25, 2012 ibid) was an Italian astrophysicist .
Pacini attended school in Urbino and studied physics in Pisa and Rome , where he graduated in 1964. From 1967 to 1973 he was at Cornell University . From 1975 to 1978 he worked at ESO , then professor of astrophysics at the University of Florence and head of the Arcetri observatory there .
In 1967 Pacini postulated that strongly magnetized neutron stars could give up their rotational energy and generate a strong flow of relativistic particles. The discovery of the pulsars only a few months later confirmed his theory.
Pacini was a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Associate Member of the Royal Astronomical Society, and Member of the American Astronomical Society . In 1997 he received the Italian Government Prize for Science ( Premio della Presidenza del Consiglio per la Scienza ). From 2001 to 2003 he was President of the International Astronomical Union .
The asteroid (25601) Francopacini , discovered by Maura Tombelli and Luciano Tesi in 2000 , was named after him.
