Frank Reiche (born December 1, 1949 in Berlin ; † March 2020 ) was a German boxer . He was German middleweight champion .

Life

Rich grew up in Berlin. He had his first boxing match at the age of 13. He began an apprenticeship as a pipe fitter, but broke it off at the age of 17 and became a police officer. He was still in the ring as an amateur boxer. He began his career as a professional boxer in October 1969 with a victory over Georg Binder. In May 1973 he faced Randolph Hombach in Wiesbaden in the fight for the German championship title in super welterweight (junior middleweight), but lost controversially on points. In mid-March 1974 he had another opportunity to become German champion, this time in the middleweight division. Rich met in Cologne on Hans-Dieter Schwartz from food and beat it before the eyes of Max Schmeling by knockout in the third round. The middleweight title was vacant because Eckhard Dagge could not compete due to an illness.

In February 1976 Reiche fought against the British Bunny Sterling for the European middleweight title. In the 13th round the Berliner went down, was counted, but got up again. The Italian referee broke off the fight because, according to him, Reiche was badly hit and unable to fight. Reiche saw it differently and threw the wreath hanging over the ring post into the audience in anger. According to a representative of the Federation of German Professional Boxers , the referee had committed a rule violation when counting and displaying the fight being stopped. At the end of January 1977 Reiche stepped in to defend the German championship against Peter Scheibner and fought with him in the Bremen town hall , which caused a sensation. "What Reiche and Scheibner offered in terms of brilliant boxing pieces, physical effort and clout has not been shown by two German prize fighters for a long time", the Hamburger Abendblatt classified the duel, which was conducted "with relentless rigor". Reiche had to be counted twice, Scheibner six times. With a left-right combination, Reiche knocked his opponent to the ground in the ninth round and won by knockout

At the end of September 1977, Reiche, who still held his title as German middleweight champion, met again on Sterling, who was no longer European champion, but lost again. Because of an injury to Reiches eyelid, the fight was stopped in the fourth round.

At the beginning of December 1977 he defended his German middleweight championship against Wolfgang Gans in Hamburg , but according to his own statement, he had considered giving up and ending his boxing career during the fight. In the end he won clearly on points and received a stock market worth 10,000 DM for the title fight. In November 1978 Reiche lost his championship title to Frank Wissenbach in Berlin . Reiche, who was paid a fee of DM 30,000 for the fight, then announced his retirement as a professional boxer. He then worked as a real estate agent.
