Frank M. Setzler

Frank Maryl Setzler (* 1902 ; † 1975 ) was an American anthropologist .

Little is known about Setzler's youth. In the mid-1920s he was a student at Ohio State University and then worked at the Museum of Classical Archeology at that university. He graduated from the University of Chicago . In 1930 he became Assistant Curator of the Division of Archeology (Archaeological Department), in 1935 Executive Curator in succession to Walter Hough and from 1937 to 1960 Chief Curator of the Department of Anthropology (Anthropological Department) at the United States National Museum, now the National Museum of Natural History , at the Smithsonian Institution .

Before World War II he took part in several archaeological campaigns in Texas , Colorado , Utah and Coahuila ( Mexico part).

In 1948 he was assistant director of the American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land , funded by the Smithsonian Institution, the National Geographic Society and the Australian government.

Frank Setzler was particularly interested in the Indian burial mounds in the USA, in particular the Hopewell culture . He also worked in the areas of Marksville in Louisiana , Proctorville in Ohio , Cumberland Island in Florida , Kincaid in Illinois , Cambridge in Maryland , New Martinsville in West Virginia, and Saltsville in Virginia .

Setzler was a member of numerous scientific organizations and also held several offices there. In 1971 he was made an honorary doctorate from Indiana University .
