Frankfort is a city in the South African province of Free State . It is the seat of the municipality of Mafube in the district of Fezile Dabi .

geography

In 2011 Frankfort had 5840 inhabitants. Immediately north is the township of Namahadi with 20,304 inhabitants. Frankfort is on the north bank of the Wilge River.

history

Frankfort was founded in 1869 on the Roodepoort farm and named after the city of Frankfurt am Main . In 1883 Johannes Brand visited the place and laid the foundation stone for the construction of the Dutch Reformed Church . In 1896 the place received municipal status. The church burned down during the Second Boer War and was rebuilt by 1918.

There is agriculture around Frankfort along the Wilge River with artificial irrigation . In addition to growing maize, cattle are raised.

The R34 trunk road runs through Frankfort and connects, among other things, Heilbron in the west with Vrede in the east. The R26 leads south towards Tweeling and Reitz and northwards to Villiers .

The city has a train station on the eastern edge on the Balfour North - Bethlehem - Bloemfontein route , which is served by freight traffic. To the north of the city is Frankfort Airport , which is not served by scheduled services ( ICAO code: FAFF).

Attractions

A national monument (national monument) which are Edwardian magistrate building as well as the police station and the post office from 1904 reported, both from sandstone were built.
