Frankfurt volleyball club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Frankfurter Volleyball Verein (FVV) is one of the largest gay and lesbian sports clubs in Europe and Frankfurt's largest gay institution , with over 800 members . It is based in Frankfurt am Main and is a member of the Turngau Frankfurt .

history

The FVV was founded in 1985 as a sports club for homosexual men with the first sport volleyball with the intention of enabling sports-loving homosexual people to practice sports in an environment free of prejudice and discrimination in Frankfurt am Main. The deliberately neutral choice of name was based on the need of the members at the time to be perceived as a completely "normal" sports club. As a founding member of the EGLSF , the association was an important part of the European gay and lesbian sports movement, which is committed to reducing discrimination against homosexual athletes in Europe. The European commitment of the FVV became particularly clear through the organization of the EuroGames 1995 in Frankfurt - the first games of this size in Europe.

sports

There are now about 30 sports practiced: u. a. Badminton , basketball , bowling , fitness , soccer , Nordic walking , rowing , PositHIV sports, cycling , swimming , squash , synchronized swimming , dancing , tennis , table tennis , trampoline gymnastics , triathlon , high diving and volleyball .

Special features of the club are, for example, the sports department with special offers for HIV- positive people and synchronized swimming. The club has the first male synchronized swimmer group in Europe and the only one in Germany.

However, the club is not only active in popular sports , but also takes part in tournaments in the (not predominantly gay or lesbian) district class, district league or district league and tournaments at home and abroad. The club is also involved in competitions of other gay / lesbian sports clubs, e.g. B. at the Gay Games , Outgames and EuroGames .

Supporting program

The FVV organizes an annual, internationally attended XMAS tournament in which around 1,000 athletes from various European countries take part. Since 2005 the association has been increasing its commitment to support Eastern European gay sports clubs, which are often victims of discrimination in view of the harsher political climate in these countries. With an “Outreach Eastern Europe” program, the FVV collects donations in order to be able to partially cover the costs of Eastern European gay and lesbian athletes that arise from their participation in the XMAS tournament. The FVV works closely with the Völklinger Kreis in this regard .

In addition to the XMAS tournament, the FVV organizes a variety of leisure events. For example, there is a summer party where guests can practice throwing handbags .
