Frano Gjini

Frano Gjini (born February 20, 1886 in Shkodra , † March 11, 1948 ) was an Albanian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Lezha . He belongs to the group of Thirty-Eight Martyrs of Albania and is venerated as a blessed .

Life

Frano Gjini, son of Tuk and Drande Grashi, studied at the Pontifical Seminary in Shkodra , then at the Collegio de Propaganda Fide in Rome . On June 25, 1908, he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Shkodra .

Pope Pius XI appointed him on June 29, 1930 abbot of Orosh Territorial Abbey . Four days later he was appointed titular bishop of Semta . He was ordained episcopal on October 28th of the same year by the Archbishop of Shkodra, Lazër Mjeda .

From 1945 he also represented the Holy See in Albania as an Apostolic Delegate .

On January 4, 1946, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Bishop of Lezha . On November 15, 1946, the Communists now ruling Albania arrested Gjini for "espionage for the Vatican". He was also charged with participating in an allegedly British-organized uprising in Postriba. After solitary confinement and severe ill-treatment, including immersion in frozen water, electric shocks, and shackling his limbs, he was eventually shot. His last words were “Long live Christ the King! Albania will live even if we die. "

beatification

On November 10, 2002, the Archdiocese of Shkodra-Pult opened the process for the beatification of Frano Gjini and thirty-seven other persecuted people. On April 26, 2016, Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of witnesses of faith. The beatification was carried out by the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints , Angelo Amato , on November 5, 2016 on behalf of Pope Francis in Shkodra.
