František Šmahel

František Šmahel (born August 17, 1934 in Trhová Kamenice ) is a Czech historian .

František Šmahel graduated from high school in Chrudim in 1953 . From 1953 to 1954 he was a miner in Ostrava . From 1954 to 1959, Šmahel studied at the Charles University in Prague . In 1963 he received his doctorate. From 1959 to 1963 he was director of the Municipal Museum in Litvínov . From 1964 to 1974 he was a research assistant at the Institute for History of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences . After the violent suppression of the Prague Spring , he had to give up his scientific work. From 1975 to 1979 he earned his living as a tram driver. From 1980 to 1989 he was a historian in the Hussite Museum in Tábor . From 1990 to 1998 he was director at the Institute for History of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (since 1992 Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic ). During this period he completed his habilitation in 1991 at the Charles University in Prague. There he became professor of history in 1995. From 1998 to 2004, Šmahel was director of the Center for Medieval Studies and in 2004 became deputy director.

Šmahel is considered one of the best connoisseurs of the Bohemian Middle Ages. His focus is on the late Middle Ages . He concentrates thematically on the Hussite Revolution . The four-volume monograph The Hussite Revolution was published in the early 1990s . The three-volume German translation published in 2002 is considered a standard work. It was included in the prestigious Monumenta Germaniae Historica series . Since the 1960s, Šmahel has played a key role in ensuring that the research into medieval history at Charles University in Prague, which was intensively pursued in Czech history, was also continued in Germany. Šmahel has also published several of his works, initially published in Czech, in German, English or French. His importance as a scientist only came into play after 1989. In 2006 Šmahel published a work in Czech and in 2014 in English translation about the visit that Emperor Charles IV paid to his nephew, the French King Charles V on Christmas 1377/78. In 2013, on the 700th anniversary of the death of Jan Hus, he presented a fundamental biography of the Bohemian reformer. In 2019 he presented a comprehensive study and edition of the Basel compact data .

For his research, Šmahel was awarded numerous scientific honors and memberships. In 1990 he received the Max Planck Research Award . In the 1993 summer semester, he was Otto von Freising visiting professor at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt . In 1994/95 he was a research fellow at the Historisches Kolleg in Munich. In 1996 he received the Hans Sigrist Prize from the University of Bern . In 2003 he became a corresponding member of the Central Management of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica. In 2004 he was awarded the silver medal of the Charles University. In 2007 he became a Corresponding Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America . In 2013 he received the “Česká hlava” (“Czech head”) science award for his life's work. He was awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Hradec Králové and the South Bohemian University of České Budějovice .
