František Bohumil Doubek , also known as Franz Doubek (born March 20, 1865 in Budweis , Kingdom of Bohemia , Austrian Empire , † October 26, 1952 in Nový Jičín , Czechoslovakia ), was a Czech painter and illustrator .

Life

Doubek was the son of a shoemaker from Ledeč nad Sázavou and Kateřina Kohoutová, the daughter of a blacksmith from Hoslovice . He graduated from elementary school and then attended a German-speaking boys' school. From 1879 to 1880 he attended the Regnier drawing school in Prague . From 1880 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague , where Antonín Lhota , František Sequens and František Čermák taught him painting. In 1885 he moved to Munich to study with Alexander von Liezen-Mayer . In Munich he married Marie Barrett. He went on several study trips abroad, with France most impressing him, so that he later returned there several times.

Between 1914 and 1918 Doubek took part in the Austro-Hungarian army in the First World War. After the war, Doubek remained in Bavaria for five years until he returned to Budweis in 1924. In 1933 he moved back to Prague, where he exhibited his works and produced numerous illustrations for various magazines. He was a member of the Czech artists' association Jednota umělců výtvarných (JUV) and from 1898 to 1900 a member of the Association of Visual Artists Mánes ( Spolek výtvarných umělců Mánes ).

With increasing health problems, František Doubek moved to a Borromean institution in Nový Jičín in 1949 , where he died in 1952. He was laid to rest in a local cemetery in the presence of a few nuns and a barber.

Doubek created individual and group portraits, occasionally with mythological and sensual scenes, some in an oriental style. In Budweis he painted a portrait of the mayor Otakar Svoboda and the factory owner Augusta Zátka, in Prague a portrait of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk . He created the altarpiece and the cross for the Cathedral of St. Nicholas . Other of his works had titles such as
