František Seraf Sequens , often Franz Sequens , (born November 21, 1836 in Pilsen , † June 14, 1896 in Prague ) was a Czech church and history painter .

Life

František Sequens graduated from secondary school in Pilsen and secondary school in Prague. From 1853 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague , then from November 8, 1854 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Wilhelm Kaulbach and later at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen with Joseph van Lerius .

In 1860 he returned to Prague. He then spent seven years in Rome on an Alois Klar scholarship . At first he dealt with history painting. After he joined the Nazarene movement in Italy , he devoted himself mainly to religious painting, whereby he also stylized some images of saints after monumental early Romanesque painting.

In 1868 he returned to his homeland, married the daughter of the Pilsen pianist Josef Gerlach and settled in Prague. There he worked with the architect Josef Mocker , among others .

In 1880 he was appointed Professor of Religious and Historical Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague as the successor to Jan Swerts , where he was Rector in the years 1882–83, 1884–85, 1886–87 and 1890–93. 98 students took part in his lectures, including Luděk Marold , František Kupka , Viktor Oliva , Josef Rolletschek and Maxmilián Pirner .

Since 1875 he was a member of the Christian Academy, where he headed the art department. He was also a member of the committee for the renovation of St. Vitus Cathedral . Since the beginning of the 1880s he was a member of the supervisory commission for the Museum of the City of Prague . In 1890, the Emperor Franz Joseph's Czech Academy of Sciences elected him a member.
