Presidential election in France in 1981

The 1981 French presidential election took place on April 26th and May 10th, 1981. It led to the first term of office of François Mitterrand , who prevailed against the incumbent President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in the second ballot. He was elected for a term from 1981 to 1988. At the time of his election, Mitterrand was 64 years old, almost ten years older than Giscard, who had taken office in 1974 at the age of 48. Mitterrand appointed the Mauroy cabinet under Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy ten days after the election .
