Franz-Peter Montforts (born March 14, 1948 in Hohenlimburg ) is a German chemist . Since 1986 he has been Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Bremen .

Life

From 1966 to 1972 studied Montfort at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , and in 1974 there was with his work on "new mining [reactions] and substitution reactions on the corrin ligand of vitamin B 12 " doctorate (at Burchard Franck ). He spent his time as a postdoc in Münster from 1975–1976 (with Burchard Franck) and 1976–1977 with Albert Eschenmoser at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich .

From 1978 to 1986, Montforts was a Liebig scholarship holder, academic employee, university assistant and private lecturer at the University of Frankfurt , where he completed his habilitation in 1983. In 1986 he accepted the professorship for organic chemistry at the University of Bremen . In 1981 he received the Werner von Siemens Medal from the Werner von Siemens Foundation and in 1983 a lecturer grant from the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie (FCI). Since 1994 Montforts has held a visiting professorship at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, USA.

His research area is the partial and total synthesis of many organic molecules, as well as structure elucidation. These include hydroporphinoid natural substances such as bonellin , chlorophyll , heme d1 and tolyporphine . Further fields of activity are the enantioselective synthesis of cyclopentanoid natural products such as methyl jasmonate , aristeromyin and carbovir , the development of new processes for the synthesis of pyrroles , the synthesis of tailor-made chlorins and azachlorines for the photodynamic therapy of tumors, of artificial photosynthesis systems with porphinoid donors and fullerenes as Acceptors of porphyrins , chlorins and isobacteriochlorins for immobilization on electrode surfaces and their use as sensors and catalysts .

Another field of activity of Montforts is the training and further education of teachers. At the general meeting of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh) in 2003, he was elected chairman of the chemistry classroom and, with his working group, represents an essential part of the teacher training center of the Universities of Oldenburg and Bremen . On his initiative, the school laboratory was set up in 2002 with the support of Association of the Chemical Industry (VCI) founded at the University of Bremen.
