Franz Bernhard Göldlin von Tiefenau (born February 4, 1762 in Lucerne , † September 16, 1819 in Beromünster ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman and historian .

Life

Göldlin von Tiefenau attended the Lucerne grammar school from 1772 to 1783, where former Jesuits taught and studied theology in Lucerne and briefly at the seminary in Meersburg . He was ordained priest in 1784 and then became vicar in Wolhusen . From 1785 to 1792 he worked as a pastor in Inwil before joining Beromünster Abbey as a canon in 1792 . In 1794 he was appointed secretary to manage the monastery, which at that time was the largest in Europe. However, it needed reforms as it was economically in poor shape. Göldlin von Tiefenau initiated these reforms and had the manuscripts in the abbey library sorted. During the Helvetic era , he managed to preserve the monastery and save its church treasure.

Göldlin von Tiefenau was appointed provost of the monastery in 1803 . He devoted himself to the history of the monastery, campaigned against the extreme state church and called for Bible Christianity to be experienced internally. In this he corresponded to Johann Michael Sailer , with whom he was in friendly contact. The research of Klaus von der Flüe and his environment was also part of his field of activity. When the Swiss part was separated from the diocese of Constance in 1814 , he was assigned the leadership of this church area as apostolic vicar . His wish to set up a diocese of Waldstätten with its seat in Lucerne was not fulfilled. Ultimately, the diocese of St. Gallen was established after the Swiss territories were administered from the diocese of Chur after the death of Göldlin von Tiefenaus .
