Franz Chvostek junior (born October 3, 1864 in Vienna ; † April 17, 1944 at Groppenstein Castle in Obervellach , Carinthia) was an Austrian internist .

Life

Chvostek was born the son of Franz Chvostek senior , who worked as an internist at the Vienna Military Medical Academy in the Josephinum. Chvostek studied medicine at the University of Vienna . During his studies, he became an “enthusiastic confessor of student arms” in 1882, a member of the Vienna academic fraternity Olympia . As a supporter of Georg von Schönerer , he came into conflict with dissenting Coleur students, and his threatened relegation from the university could still be prevented. In 1888 Chvostek was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . He was assistant to Heinrich von Bamberger , Otto Kahler , Edmund von Neusser and Theodor Meynert . In 1894 he received his habilitation .

In 1909 he became full professor and in 1911 head of the IV. Medical Clinic in Vienna (created for him), which in 1913, one year after Edmund von Neusser's death, was in the III. Medical Clinic, where Chvostek succeeded Norbert Ortner (1865–1935) , who was moving up to the Second Medical Clinic .

In May 1911 Chvostek was mentioned frequently in daily reports because he was called in at the request of Alma Mahler-Schindler (already in Paris) to treat Gustav Mahler (1860-1911).

From the winter semester of 1931, Franz Chvostek was on sick leave due to a heart condition. Hermann Kahler (1891–1951) represented him at the clinic and in teaching, and in March 1932 he announced his practice to the Vienna Medical Association , which gave rise to sharp newspaper comments. In May 1933 the Ministry of Finance decided to retire Chvostek and the III. Medical clinic disbanded.

Chvostek had already withdrawn to his estate at Burg Groppenstein in 1931, where he was married in his later years.

Chvostek described the "Chvostek anemia " named after him . A few months before the Goethe Medal for Art and Science was awarded on his 80th birthday, Franz Chvostek died on April 17, 1944.

Political beliefs

Chvostek was a staunch opponent of women's studies in Austria and allowed this to be enforced in his courses by force.

After the First World War , Chvostek joined the movement of Erich Ludendorff as part of the nationalist and anti-Semitic Völkisch movement . The III. Medical clinic was called the "Hakenkreuzlerklinik" as early as the 1920s, but Chvostek is not known to be a member of the NSDAP . During the Nazi era , Chvostek was nominated for the award of the Goethe Medal for Art and Science in 1943 and 1944, referring to his “always national” attitude.

Honors

In 1955, Feldgasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was renamed Chvostekgasse after him.

In 1974 the Olympia fraternity tried to erect a bust for Chvostek in the arcade courtyard of the University of Vienna. The rejection of the application was justified by the university senate with the lack of importance of Chvostek in his field.
