Franz Fischer (archaeologist)

Franz Richard Fischer (born January 7, 1925 in Pforzheim ; † October 1, 2016 in Bonn ) was a German archaeologist .

Life

Franz Richard Fischer was in 1952 when Wolfgang Kimmig about " late Celtic finds from the Baden Oberland" to Dr. phil. PhD. During the 1950s he was involved in Kurt Bittel's excavations in Hattuscha ( Hittites , Turkey ). He married his fellow student Eva-Maria Bossert , the daughter of the German archaeologist Helmuth Theodor Bossert, in Istanbul in 1957 . Their two children were born in 1958 and 1965. Fischer completed his habilitation in 1962 with a paper on the ceramic finds from the Hittite capital Hattuscha. Fischer was Professor of Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Tübingen and until his retirement in 1991 director of the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory (today's name: Institute for Prehistory and Early History and Archeology of the Middle Ages ).

Fischer's research focuses on the pre-Roman Iron Age of southern Central Europe, whereby his methodological approach consists in the combination of archaeological sources with written records . So he often appeared with work on Caesar's Gallic War or the Alpine campaign in 15 BC. BC. He carried out his own excavation projects in the late Celtic oppidum Altenburg-Rheinau on the Upper Rhine.
