Franz Friedrich Graeber

Franz Friedrich Graeber (born April 12, 1784 in Wertherbruch , Rhineland ; † August 13, 1857 in Duisburg ) was a Protestant theologian and, as superintendent general, spiritual director of the Westphalia Church Province of the Prussian Evangelical Church in Münster .

Life

Born as the son of pastor Wilhelm Graeber and Euphemia Beyer, Franz Friedrich Graeber attended grammar school in Duisburg and graduated from high school in 1802. He then began studying theology at the University of Duisburg , which he continued at the University of Halle .

In 1808 he took over his first pastoral position in Düssel (Wülfrath) and in 1816 moved to Baerl ( Rhineland ). In 1820 he took over a pastor's position in Barmen-Gemarke and was appointed superintendent of the Elberfeld church district there in 1823 .

In 1828 Graeber was also President of the Jülich-Kleve-Berg Provincial Synod and in 1838 also President of the Rhenish Provincial Synod .

Finally, in 1846, Graeber received - in succession to Wilhelm Ross - the appointment to general superintendent of the ecclesiastical province of Westphalia of the Evangelical Church in Prussia and thus became its spiritual director. On September 30, 1856, Graber retired and handed over the office of general superintendent to Julius Wiesmann .

Franz Friedrich Graeber was married to Henriette Krafft († 1855), a daughter of the Reformed preacher Elias Christoph Krafft , since August 10, 1808 . Her four sons were also theologians. His grandson Friedrich Graeber was a well-known architect.

Honor

The theological faculty of the University of Bonn awarded Franz Friedrich Graeber an honorary doctorate on June 25, 1830 .
