On March 4, 1899, Geppert passed the teaching examination and received the teaching license ( facultas docendi ) in the subjects history and German for all classes, in geography up to the lower secondary and in Latin up to the fourth. On May 5, 1899, he took a supplementary examination in Latin, which he failed, however. On April 1, 1899, Geppert started his seminar year at the Wiesbaden high school . The probationary year at the Realgymnasium in Wiesbaden and at the grammar schools in Höchst am Main and in Marburg followed on April 1, 1900 . After the end of the preparatory service, Geppert taught at various high schools in Prussian provincial towns. For a short time he was a scientific assistant teacher at the grammar school in Schneidemühl (April 1 to September 30, 1901) and then at the Oberrealschule in Graudenz , where on April 1, 1902 he was given a permanent position as a senior teacher. On October 1, 1903, he moved to the Gymnasium in Gnesen , and a year later to the Gymnasium in Waldenburg (Silesia) .

On April 1, 1907, Geppert left the Prussian school service and went to Hamburg , where he stayed until the end of his life. He taught at the Oberrealschule Eimsbüttel and from Easter 1921 at the Wilhelm Gymnasium . During the Nazi era , Geppert was retired in July 1934 due to the Professional Civil Service Act , although he had not reached the age limit.

Geppert volunteered at the Schillerbund (as a founding member of the Hamburg local group) and at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus , where he performed Greek dramas with his students. He published articles in various newspapers and magazines as well as popular scientific writings on historical topics, including a Bismarck biography which was reprinted several times.
