Franz Grehn (born April 23, 1948 in Würzburg ) is a German ophthalmologist and university professor .

Life

Grehn grew up in Würzburg. After graduating from the Siebold-Gymnasium in Würzburg in 1967, he studied human medicine at the universities of Würzburg and Freiburg i. Br. , Where in 1973 he passed the state examination and was with a thesis on cytophotometry doctorate . At the beginning of his studies he was accepted into the German National Academic Foundation .

After working as a medical assistant in internal medicine, surgery and ophthalmology, he worked from 1974 to 1976 with a grant from the German Research Foundation as a postdoc at the Department of Neurophysiology at the Free University of Berlin with O.-J. Grüsser, where he used an animal model to study neuronal changes in the retinal ganglion cells with increased intraocular pressure and ischemia .

He then completed his specialist training at the University Eye Clinic Freiburg i. Br. (Under G. Mackensen) and completed his habilitation in 1984 through his investigations into neuronal changes in an experimental glaucoma model, funded by a special research area of the German Research Foundation. Franz Grehn was appointed to the chair of the University Eye Clinic in Mainz, which he held from 1990 to 1995, from his position as senior physician in Freiburg and after two rejected calls to chief physician positions. After two further appointments, he held the chair at the University Eye Clinic in Würzburg from 1995 until he left at the end of 2014.

He is currently Senior Professor at the University Eye Clinic Würzburg and Senior Clinical Expert at the University Eye Clinic Mainz.

In addition to his professional activity, he devotes himself to classical chamber music. In addition to Marcus Blum, he is co-director of the “ DOG in Concert” charity campaign , where ophthalmologists make music for the benefit of the Eye Foundation .

He is married to the pediatrician Dörte Grehn and has three sons.

Scientific focus

The focus of his research is on the various forms of glaucoma ("green star"). For this purpose, he set up a cell biological laboratory (G. Schlunck) and an electrophysiological-psychophysical laboratory (T. Meigen) in basic research at the Würzburg Eye Clinic. His clinical focus was on the various treatment options for glaucoma, in particular the development of new surgical techniques (together with T. Klink). Lately he has been focusing more and more on the rare forms of glaucoma in children (German Children's Glaucoma Center Mainz). At the Würzburg Clinic, he promoted corneal diseases with the development of a corneal bank ( G. Geerling ), strabismus treatment and neuro-ophthalmology (H. Steffen), plastic and orbital surgery (W. Lieb) and biometrics ( W. Haigis ). During his work in Mainz and Würzburg, four of his employees were appointed to chairs. Several employees switched to senior physician positions in large eye clinics.

Grehn is the author of the student textbook ophthalmology, editor of several handbooks and has published 150 scientific articles. He is on the editorial board of several professional journals.

Memberships

Grehn is a member of various national and international specialist societies and an honorary member of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG). He was president of the DOG in 2002/2003, then its secretary until 2013. Together with Anselm Kampik, he organized and supervised the Essen further training for ophthalmologists (from 1995) and then (from 2000) the Ophthalmological Academy Germany (AAD) Düsseldorf. 2012–2013 he was President of the World Glaucoma Association, 2012–2016 President of the Glaucoma Research Society and held various offices at the European Glaucoma Society. In 2016 he was the Congress Honorary President of the International Society for Glaucoma Surgery (ISGS). He is an honorary member of numerous international glaucoma societies and has been awarded several national and international scientific prizes. Franz Grehn is an honorary doctorate from the University of Iași (Romania).

He is a corresponding member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature .
