Life

Geerling attended the Norbert-Gymnasium Knechtsteden and studied human medicine at RWTH Aachen University and at a teaching hospital at King's College London . In 1994 he received his doctorate from M. Reim on examinations of the cornea and conjunctiva after chemical burns using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis . In 1996 he was certified as a specialist and until 2005 worked at the Lübeck University Medical Center in Lübeck . During this time he also worked as a visiting scientist at the Institute for Biomedical Optics (formerly the Medical Laser Center) at the University of Lübeck .

From 1997 to 2000 and in 2003 he completed two research stays at the Moorfields Eye Hospital and Institute of Ophthalmology in London, 18 months of which each as a scholarship from the DFG and the Special Trustees of the Moorfields Eye Hospital. There he learned the techniques of lamellar corneal surgery from John KG Dart and plastic surgery from J Richard O Collin and Geoffrey E Rose. To this end, he worked in Sir Peng T Khaw's basic scientific research group on the wound healing response of the eye.

In 2000 Geerling became a senior physician in Lübeck, where he introduced the techniques of lamellar corneal transplantation . In 2004 he became the managing senior physician at the Lübeck Eye Clinic. In 2003 he completed his habilitation in Lübeck with the thesis Natural tear substitutes . In 2005 he moved to the University Clinic Würzburg as professor of ophthalmology and was active as senior physician and deputy to the clinic director. There he learned glaucoma surgery and expanded the Lions corneal bank . In 2011 he moved to Düsseldorf University as a professor of ophthalmology, where he became director of the University Eye Clinic.

Scientific focus

Geerling's clinical and scientific interests and research focus are the development of a natural tear substitute fluid and replacement tissues for the reconstruction and regeneration of the surface of the eye as well as the development of new transplantation techniques for the treatment of corneal and surface diseases, especially dry eye , corneal endothelial dystrophies and keratoconus . He was one of the first to introduce the methods of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty and endothelial keratoplasty in Germany and the use of intraoperative optical coherence tomography .

His operational focus is on surgery of the anterior segment of the eye, in particular keratoplasty , whereby, in addition to perforating corneal transplantation, he has specialized in the Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) method . Another focus is the surgery of glaucoma and plastic surgery in the area of the eyelids and tear ducts as well as the treatment of tumors and inflammatory changes in the eye socket. He has published over 150 articles in scientific journals and books and edited two books.
