Anselm Kampik

Anselm Kampik (* 1949 in Dillingen a. D. Danube ) is a German ophthalmologist , scientist and university professor . His scientific specialty are the diseases of the vitreous body and the retina . From 1987 to 1993 he was full professor for ophthalmology and director of the eye clinic at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg , from October 1993 until the end of 2015 he was professor for ophthalmology and director at the eye clinic at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich . Kampik retired in October 2015 and has been running an ophthalmologist practice in Munich since then .

life and work

Studies and ophthalmological training

After graduating from high school in 1968 at the humanistic Johann-Michael-Sailer-Gymnasium in Dillingen a. d. Danube, he began studying human medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In 1974 he received his doctorate on a topic related to retinal detachment . This was followed by further training as a specialist in ophthalmology at the eye clinic of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich under the direction of Otto-Erich Lund . From 1979 to 1980 a fellowship at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) followed. His main research areas were (histo-) pathology and electron microscopy in diseases of the retina and vitreous humor. At the same time he dealt with microsurgery of the eye, with work on other issues being carried out, such as: B. glaucoma and cornea . Full professor and director at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg

After accepting a C2 professorship for ophthalmology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1985 , he was appointed full professor of ophthalmology at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg (successor to Wolfgang Leydhecker ) in 1987 . He held this position until 1993. In addition to retinology, the focus of research at this time was on topics relating to microsurgical procedures for vitreous and retinal diseases as well as questions on diabetic retinopathy and diseases of the vitreoretinal interface. In October 1993 he was appointed full professor of ophthalmology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich as the successor to Otto-Erich Lund. During this time, the eye clinic achieved an outstanding international reputation, particularly in the treatment of vitreous and retinal diseases, and became one of the largest eye clinics in Europe with 50,000 patients treated and around 9,000 operations annually.

In addition to his clinical and scientific work, Kampik was Vice President from 1995 to 1996, President from 1996 to 1997 and then Secretary General of the " German Ophthalmological Society " (DOG) from 1999 to 2014 . From 1992 to 2001 he was a member of the board of the Retinological Society as vice-president. He was also a co-founder of the Ophthalmic Academy Germany (AAD). From 2011 to 2014 he was President of the Academia Ophthalmologica Europaea . In these functions, he was particularly committed to international networking and cooperation in ophthalmology. Kampik is the author and editor of several textbooks and specialist books. He is also a member of the editorial board of several national and international journals. He works as a reviewer on numerous questions relating to ophthalmology , as well as for the German Research Foundation (DFG). From 2002 to 2014 he was chairman of the habilitation committee of the medical faculty of the LMU.

He wrote around 560 MEDLINE listed articles, which have been cited around 16,000 times. The article Epiretinal and vitreous membranes: comparative study of 56 cases ranks 68th out of the 100 most cited papers between 1975 and 2006. The work Proposed international clinical diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema disease severity scales was cited more than 1000 times. This makes Anselm Kampik one of the most cited scientists in ophthalmology worldwide.

Activity as a resident ophthalmologist

After his retirement in October 2015, he and other colleagues founded a conservative and operative ophthalmologist's practice in Munich.
