Franz Grupp (born December 12, 1905 in Donzdorf , Württemberg; † August 7, 2003 ) was a German manager and owner of the mechanical tricot factory Gebr. Mayer KG (today: Trigema) in Burladingen .

Career

Grupp studied law in Munich, Tübingen and Kiel and joined the Catholic student union AV Cheruskia Tübingen in 1924 , later becoming a member of AV Guestfalia Tübingen . In 1930 he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD. Then he worked in Donzdorf in a law firm and for his father's leather goods factory. In 1936 he joined the National Socialist Lawyers' Association and was a member of the NSDAP .

In 1939, Grupp married Änne Mayer and joined the mechanical tricot factory Gebr. Mayer KG of his father-in-law Josef Mayer. After the company's founder died in 1956, he became managing director. Under his aegis, the main plant in Burladingen was expanded and modernized. Ten new branches were opened by 1969. In retrospect, his son and successor Wolfgang Grupp describes his father's tone of dealing with the employees as "rabid". In 1967 Grupp was appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Chad for Baden-Württemberg , he was part of the entourage of Federal President Heinrich Lübke on a visit to the Central African country.

Grupp reacted to stagnating sales of its company in the underwear segment by expanding its range to include tennis clothing. The tennis player Wilhelm Bungert was hired in 1967 to market the new segment . Group also invested outside the textile industry. Among other things, he founded a factory for plastic injection molding. The oversized diversification plunged the company deep into the red. In 1969 he handed over the management of the company, which had a turnover of 17 million DM and was burdened with 10 million DM in debts, to his eldest son Wolfgang Grupp. Together they set the course for the production of tennis and leisure clothing. The company successors in 1969 at Trigema by Wolfgang Grupp and at Plastro Mayer in 1979 by his youngest son Johannes Grupp saw a turnaround in both family businesses. Plastro Mayer GmbH has been an independent company since 1976.
