Franz Joseph Heim (born March 18, 1792 in Scheer , † October 17, 1845 in Ludwigsburg ) was a Württemberg chemist and physician . He was the personal physician of the Queen of Württemberg.

Life

Franz Heim attended grammar schools in Augsburg and Konstanz and then studied medicine at the universities in Freiburg, Landshut and Würzburg. Even before he finished his studies, he was assigned a soldier by drawing lots and as a junior doctor at the military hospital in Stuttgart. In January 1813 he was promoted to senior physician and took part in the campaign in Saxony as regimental physician for the Prince Adam cavalry regiment . In 1827 he became professor of chemistry at the Württemberg war school in Ludwigsburg and personal physician to Queen Mathilde , whom he accompanied on a trip to England. After the Queen's death, he continued to work as a regimental doctor in the Royal Württemberg 1st Cavalry Regiment in addition to his teaching activities.

On August 3, 1838, he was elected with the academic surname Jenner as a member ( registration number 1455 ) of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina .

As a doctor, Franz Heim made an appearance primarily with his publications on smallpox . His nickname Jenner , chosen at the Leopoldina, is a throwback to the English country doctor Edward Jenner , who developed the modern vaccination against smallpox.

In 1841 he published the German edition of the Observations on the variolae vaccinae by Robert Ceely (1797-1880).

Franz Heim was awarded the Order of the Württemberg Crown (Knight) for his services .
