Franz Held (politician)

Franz Xaver Held (born November 4, 1852 in Linz , † April 12, 1932 in Graz ) was an Austrian politician and teacher. He was a member of the Austrian House of Representatives and a member of the Provisional National Assembly .

Life

Held was born as the son of the state accountant Franz Xaver Held. He attended elementary school and grammar school in his hometown Linz and then studied philosophy at the University of Innsbruck . In 1873 he became a member of the Upper Austrian Germanic fraternity in Vienna . In 1875 he took a position as a teacher at the State Trade School in Linz, in 1878 he switched to the German State Trade School in Brno , where he also became a professor in 1884. He taught in Bielitz from 1887 before returning to Brno in 1894. From 1899 he was a professor at the German State Trade School in Pilsen , and from 1907 he finally taught at the State Trade School in Graz. He was involved in Styria as a member of the main management in the association of the German Protection Association Südmark and was chairman of the General German Gymnastics Club in Graz.

Held was politically active as a municipal councilor in Graz between 1911 and 1914. After Heinrich Wastian emerged victorious from the 1911 Reichsrat election in the constituencies of Styria 2 and Styria 9 and accepted the mandate in constituency 9, there was a supplementary election in constituency 2 on October 24, 1911. Held, who applied in advertisements as a “man of proven ability, rich experience and tireless enthusiasm for work”, won this supplementary election with 58.7 percent in the first ballot. After his election in the House of Representatives, he joined the German National Association and was from October 1, 1912 a member of the Young German Association in the German National Association, which was later renamed the Deutschvölkische Vereinigung. Between September 1916 and October 1917 he was a member of the German Working Group in the German National Association, after which he became a member of the German National Party, which later became part of the Greater German People's Party . Held belonged to the House of Representatives until it was dissolved and was then a member of the Provisional National Assembly from October 21, 1918 to February 16, 1919.

Held married Antonia Straka in 1887 and had two daughters and a son. Originally of Roman Catholic faith, he converted to the Evangelical Church AB in 1901
