Franz Hoowaarts SVD (born July 19, 1878 in Bottrop ; † March 24, 1954 ) was a Roman Catholic priest , Steyler missionary and diocesan bishop of Tsaochowfu in China .

Life

Franz Hoowaarts was born in Bottrop in 1878 , then part of the diocese of Münster . In 1893, at the age of 14, he joined the Order of the Steyler Missionaries (SVD). He was ordained a priest on February 24, 1905. He celebrated his first session in the old Herz-Jesu-Kirche in his home parish Herz-Jesu in Bottrop. On November 12, 1934 he was appointed by Pope Pius XI. Appointed Vicar Apostolic of Tsachowful and Titular Bishop of Ucres . On February 24, 1935, Hoowaarts was ordained bishop by the Vicar Apostolic of Yenchowfu Augustin Henninghaus SVD. Coconscrators were the Apostolic Administrator of Tsingtao Georg Weig SVD and the Apostolic Administrator of Sinyangchow Hermann Schoppelrey SVD. With the elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate to a diocese on April 11, 1946 Hoowaarts became the first diocesan bishop. He died on March 24, 1954 and was buried in the cemetery of the mission house St. Michael the Steyler Missionaries in Steyl in the Netherlands . The bishopric has been vacant since his death.
