Franz Josef Kranewitter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Josef Kranewitter (born May 31, 1893 in Nassereith , † November 2, 1974 in Zams ) was an Austrian sculptor and painter.

Life

With the support of his uncle Franz Kranewitter , who recognized his talent, Franz Josef Kranewitter was able to attend the state trade school in Innsbruck after eight years of elementary school. He then studied from 1914 to 1922 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna  in the general sculpture school with Josef Müllner and in the special school for sculpture with Edmund von Hellmer . In 1920 he married Maria Krismer, also from Nassereith, with whom he moved back to Nassereith in 1922.

Kranewitter worked there as a freelance sculptor and created, among other things, war memorials, crucifixes and portrait busts, but also larvae for the Nassereither Schellerlaufen . As an autodidact, he drew portraits and landscapes.

Due to a serious eye condition and a subsequent star operation, he was no longer able to work as an artist from the late 1960s. He died in 1974 after a stroke and was buried in the cemetery in Dormitz.

In 1968 his home municipality Nassereith made him an honorary citizen.
