Franz Joseph Fleischbein , also Frantz and François Jacques Fleischbein (born June 14, 1802 in Godramstein , † November 16, 1868 in New Orleans ) was a German-American portrait painter , daguerreotype artist , ambrotypist and drawing teacher.

Live and act

He came from the Fleischbein family, originally from Babenhausen (Hesse) , then resident in the imperial city of Frankfurt and later ennobled, of which a branch immigrated to the southern Palatinate via Strasbourg . Franz Joseph Fleischbein was born as the son of Heinrich Fleischbein (1753–1814) and his wife Anna Barbara geb. Stump (1764-1832). Heinrich Benedikt Fleischbein (1747–1793), his father's cousin, worked as a Catholic theology professor at the University of Heidelberg and established a foundation for poor children in Gleisweiler .

Franz Joseph Fleischbein probably completed an art degree in Munich before 1833 , after which he stayed in Paris . There he learned in the studio of Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson . In 1833 he moved with his wife Marie Louise Tetu (1802–1895) and their four children to New Orleans, where he worked as a portrait painter, drawing teacher and later also as a photographer.
