Heinrich Benedikt Fleischbein
Heinrich Benedikt Fleischbein (born September 19, 1747 in Gleisweiler ; † June 19, 1793 in Heidelberg ) was a Catholic priest and full professor of theology at Heidelberg University .
Origin and family
He was born as the son of Gleisweiler Mayor Simon Fleischbein and his wife Maria Elisabetha geb. Lerg (also Lerch). They lived in or built the property at Hauptstrasse 7 in Gleisweiler, on which their coat of arms is inscribed. The village's baroque cemetery cross bears the father's death inscription on the side, it may have been donated by him. Franz Joseph Fleischbein (1802–1868), the son of his cousin Heinrich Fleischbein (1753–1814), emigrated to America and became a well-known portrait painter in New Orleans .
Live and act
Heinrich Benedikt Fleischbein studied at Heidelberg University from 1763. In 1764 he earned his bachelor's degree here , and in 1765 the title of Magister artium . He was then ordained a priest and taught in lower schools.
On July 19, 1785, Fleischbein was appointed full professor of theology at Heidelberg University, as well as preacher at the Church of the Holy Spirit , at the suggestion of the later Electoral Palatinate Lazarist superior Pierre Antoine Saligot (1749–1793) . He taught pastoral theology and language skills . In 1786 and 1790 he served as dean of the theological faculty , and in 1791 as vice dean. In 1786 Heinrich Benedikt Fleischbein gave the jubilee sermon for the 400th anniversary of the university, in the same year he was awarded the title of Doctor theologiae . In 1791 he published a pamphlet against the Franciscan Eulogius Schneider , who supported the upheaval in France and joined the Jacobins ( "Of Mr. Eulogius Schneider's errors and dangers in the speech of the conformity of the Gospel with the new constitution of the Franks" ). The priest Karl Klein (1769-1824) put his theological diploma with him in 1792.
Fleischbein died in Heidelberg in 1793 at the age of 45. He was probably the victim of the spotted fever epidemic that prevailed at the time during the war , to which numerous Palatinate residents fell victim, including his sponsor Father Saligot and other Heidelberg personalities. In his hometown of Gleisweiler, he established a foundation for poor children as early as 1787. Since 1776 he was one of the members of the Heidelberg Pactum Marianum , the death brotherhood of the former Jesuit Sodals .
