Franz Julius of Saxe-Lauenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Julius von Sachsen-Lauenburg (born September 13, 1584 in Ratzeburg , † October 8, 1634 in Vienna ) was a prince of Sachsen-Lauenburg .

Life

Franz Julius was the eldest son of Duke Franz II of Saxony-Lauenburg (1547–1619) from his second marriage to Maria (1566–1626), daughter of Duke Julius of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . Like that of his siblings, his upbringing and training had been carried out superficially and incompletely. His older half-brother August followed in 1619 as Duke of Saxony-Lauenburg.

On October 4, 1619, he signed an inheritance contract with his brothers in Lauenburg; in exchange for his brother August's recognition as a duke, he received the Anker farm as his residence and an annual pension of 2500 Reichstalers. Franz Julius entered the service of the Viennese court as the imperial chamberlain and was entrusted with several diplomatic missions by Emperor Ferdinand II . After his brother August occupied the Wittum of Franz Julius 'mother in Neuhaus , Franz Julius protested violently and got into arguments with August that lasted until Franz Julius' death. Franz Julius led the 1630 Reichshofrat the action of his house against Hamburg to office and Ritzebüttel Castle .

Franz Julius probably died of the plague in Vienna without leaving an heir. The Anker estate fell back to Duke August von Lauenburg.

Marriage and children

Franz Julius married Agnes (1592–1629) on May 14, 1620 , daughter of Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg . None of the seven children in this marriage survived early childhood:
