Franz Keim (born December 28, 1840 in Stadl-Paura , Upper Austria ; † June 27, 1918 in Brunn am Gebirge , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian writer .

Life

Franz Keim, who was born in Upper Austria in 1840, began studying at the University of Vienna in 1860 . Since his parents could no longer support him financially, he had to break off his studies early. He started various activities. So he was with the Navy in Trieste . He also worked as a tutor, just as he did for the Southern Railway Company . During this time he began his literary work and his drama Sulamith emerged , which was also performed at the Vienna City Theater and the Burgtheater . This success enabled him to continue his studies and finally finish it in 1874.

After completing his studies, he worked as a high school teacher in St. Pölten until 1898. There he met Rilke . From 1902 until 1913 he lived in Vienna-Döbling . From there he moved to Brunn am Gebirge to house number 12 of the Art Nouveau houses in the street that is named after him today, where he also died. He is buried at the cemetery in a grave of honor in the city of Mödling .

Act

In 1908 the first edition of "Die Nibelungen. Dem Deutschen Volke re-tales" appeared as number 22 in Gerlach's youth library of the Viennese publisher Gerlach & Wiedling . Franz Keim's text was a new version of the Nibelungenlied aimed at children and in this respect differs from the other volumes from Gerlach's youth library. The pictures and furnishings were done by the commercial artist Carl Otto Czeschka . According to Hans Ries, Czeschka's Nibelungs are among the top works in book illustration.

Keim had a German national sentiment and mainly wrote folk plays from the history of Lower Austria .

Appreciation

On October 5, 1924, a memorial in his honor was unveiled in Wertheimsteinpark in Vienna- Döbling (19th district). In 1933 the Keimweg in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him, as was Franz Keimgasse in Mödling . A memorial plaque is attached to house number 12 in the street named after him in Brunn am Gebirge, where he last lived and died.
