Franz Kraus (born October 3, 1947 in Amberg ) is a German electrical engineer, former board member and supervisory board of ARRI AG .

Life

Prof. Franz Karl Kraus studied communications engineering in Regensburg . He began his career as a development engineer at Rohde & Schwarz in Munich . He continued her as a research assistant and project manager at the Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin . After a year as a visiting scholar in the United States, he returned to Germany in 1983 , worked as a technical director for ARRI and held numerous management positions before becoming a member of the board in 2001. On September 1, 2018, Franz Kraus moved to the Supervisory Board of ARRI AG .

As managing director of the post production company ARRI TV, Franz Kraus got to know a number of well-known German directors and producers. Through his function as managing director of the Futura group / film publishing house of the authors from June 1996 this circle expanded. As managing director of the Futura group / film publishing house of the authors and the BA film production , he began his work as a co-producer.

In 2004 Kraus was appointed honorary professor and head of the technology department at the University of Television and Film Munich, and in 2018 he was appointed head of the camera department. In 2006 he received the Oskar Messter Medal for “outstanding services as an initiator and promoter of digital film”. Since 2007 he has been a member of the board of trustees at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute. In 2013 he was appointed curator at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS and a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). Kraus was elected honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 2014.

Franz Kraus has made a decisive contribution to the successful development of ARRI over the past decades with many innovations. He achieved great merits in the change in film technology in the course of digitization, especially in the development of the Alexa digital camera and the early development of multi-channel LED technology at ARRI light development. During the period in which he was responsible for research and development at ARRI, the company received a total of nine awards for outstanding technical performance from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . He and two colleagues each received an Oscar in 2002 and 2011 : an Academy Plaque in 2002 and an Academy Award of Merit in 2011 - Oscar Statuette - the highest award in the film industry worldwide - for the design and development of the ARRI laser film setter, which was groundbreaking for the development of digital products at ARRI. In 2018 Franz Kraus was appointed a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In February 2019 he received the Bud Stone Award at the ASC Awards American Society of Cinematographers in Los Angeles for his important contribution to the American and global film industry. ASC President Kees van Ostrum said at the award ceremony, which was completely surprising for Franz Kraus: "His tenacity and commitment eventually alowed him to spearhaed the creation toll with the ARRI ALEXA that deeply touches and inspires everyone in this room tonight."

Prof. Franz Kraus is married to the director Margrét Rún . The couple has three children.
