Life
Mellentin, the son of a small farmer and a maid, attended elementary school and worked as a farm worker. From 1940 to 1945 he had to do military service in the Wehrmacht , most recently as a non-commissioned officer. He experienced the end of the Second World War at the beginning of May 1945 in his birthplace.
On May 12, 1945 he was appointed mayor of his home village Stralendorf by Parchim District Administrator August Hase. Then he worked as a clerk for registration and purchase in Parchim and as a secretary for land reform . In 1945 he joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and the Association of Mutual Peasant Aid (VdgB) and in 1946 became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). From 1946 to 1950 he acted as secretary of the VdgB district committee Parchim. In 1950 he attended the Mecklenburg State Party School in Wiligrad . He was then head of department in the VdgB state board of Mecklenburg in 1950/51. From 1950 to 1952 he was a member of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with the mandate of the VdgB . From February 1951 to 1952 he was Secretary for Agriculture of the SED state leadership in Mecklenburg. After studying from April 1952 to June 1953 at the party college of the CPSU in Moscow , from August 1953 to 1954 he assumed the function of a secretary for agriculture in the SED district leadership in Halle (successor to Friedrich Hecht ). Again as the successor to Friedrich Hecht, he was then head of the Agriculture Department of the Central Committee of the SED from October 1954 to March 1958. From April 1958 to October 1967 he was again secretary or head of the Office for Agriculture of the SED district leadership in Halle (successor to Gustav Waschkowitz). He was replaced by the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the SED “because of his ideological lagging behind and organizational inability to implement the decisions of the Central Committee”. From 1958 Mellentin was temporarily a member of the Halle district assembly . He completed a degree in agricultural engineering as an engineer for agricultural engineering. He later worked as the director of the engineering school for agrochemicals and crop protection in Wettin .
