On May 12, 1945 he was appointed mayor of his home village Stralendorf by Parchim District Administrator August Hase. Then he worked as a clerk for registration and purchase in Parchim and as a secretary for land reform . In 1945 he joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and the Association of Mutual Peasant Aid (VdgB) and in 1946 became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). From 1946 to 1950 he acted as secretary of the VdgB district committee Parchim. In 1950 he attended the Mecklenburg State Party School in Wiligrad . Again as the successor to Friedrich Hecht, he was then head of the Agriculture Department of the Central Committee of the SED from October 1954 to March 1958. From April 1958 to October 1967 he was again secretary or head of the Office for Agriculture of the SED district leadership in Halle (successor to Gustav Waschkowitz). He was replaced by the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the SED “because of his ideological lagging behind and organizational inability to implement the decisions of the Central Committee”. From 1958 Mellentin was temporarily a member of the Halle district assembly . He completed a degree in agricultural engineering as an engineer for agricultural engineering.
