Franz Migerka (born September 20, 1828 in Reintal , Lower Austria , † February 21, 1915 in Vienna ) was an Austrian tradesman.

Life

Migerka came from a family of craftsmen. At first he was an educator. In 1861 he joined the Brno Chamber of Commerce and Industry. There he suggested the establishment of the Moravian Trade Association and the organization of trade courts, which should be exemplary for the entire monarchy.

Migerka was appointed to the Ministry of Commerce in Vienna, where he mainly represented Austria vis-à-vis other countries, for example in 1869 at the opening of the Suez Canal , in 1876 at the World Exhibition in Philadelphia and in 1890 at the occupational safety conference in Berlin.

As early as 1859, Franz Migerka published a monograph entitled "About the importance of industrial exhibitions". In his remarks, he argues why he regards them as an “excellent development tool” for industry.

He dealt with issues of popular education and the women's movement and initiated the “Exhibition on Women's Work” at the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 in his role as editor of the “Official Documents”. Franz Migerka, Wilhelm Exner (1840–1931) and other exhibition participants such as the industrialist Arthur Krupp (1856–1938) were the driving forces behind the idea of founding an Austrian museum for technical developments and inventions. Three years after Migerka's death, in 1918, the Technical Museum for Industry and Commerce opened in Vienna.

From June 1883 until his voluntary retirement in April 1897, Migerka was a central trade inspector with the rank of ministerial councilor, whereby he knew how to provide general acceptance and recognition for the newly created trade inspection. He was also President of the Vienna Commercial Association ( Vienna-Innere Stadt , Maria-Theresien-Straße 22) for nine years and in 1890 the founder of the Museum of Industrial Hygiene (Rathausstraße 23, from 1900/01 also Ebendorferstraße 6). He participated in the founding of the people's education association and was a member of the board of the Wiener Sparkasse.

Migerka's wife was the writer and social worker Katharina Migerka (1844–1922), his daughter the women's rights activist Helene Migerka (1867–1928).

During his time at work he campaigned for social affairs with conviction and warmth. With his wife he founded housekeeping evening courses for women workers, where he also taught himself. His working participation in the aid association for apprenticeship girls, the association of working women, shows his primary interest in women's progress, for which he campaigned well into old age.

The body of Franz Migerka, who died in his apartment in Vienna- Leopoldstadt , Czerningasse 7, was consecrated on February 24, 1915 in the presence of Trade Minister Rudolf Schuster von Bonnott (1855–1930) in the parish church of St. Johann and then on the Döblinger Buried in the cemetery to rest.

In 1932 Migerkastraße in Vienna- Favoriten was named after him.
