Franz Otto Kopp (born January 8, 1937 in Hanover ; † February 9, 2015 there ) was a German engineer and from 1976 lecturer in the design and media department at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences . As a senior engineer at the Leibniz University of Hanover , he and Erwin Stein constructed, among other things, the so-called Hanoverian replica of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's four-species calculating machine .

Life

Franz Otto Kopp studied mechanical engineering at the University of Hanover and received his doctorate in 1973 from the mechanical engineering department with the title A Contribution to the Structure Synthesis of Mechanisms . Before that, he had been working at the (today's) Institute for Gear Technology in Mechanical Engineering at Leibniz University under the direction of Gerd Kiper since 1966 , most recently as chief engineer until 2002.

At the same time, Franz Otto Kopp has worked as a lecturer at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences since 1976 in the field of media and design .

Kopp also attracted attention as an artist with his "crawling animals made of wire", most recently in January 2015 during an exhibition on the FAUST site in Linden .

In his retirement, Kopp had taught at the University of Hanover. After friends and companions of the engineer missed him for days in mid-February 2015, the police finally found the “ mentor of the Leibniz machine” dead in his apartment in the Hanover district of Südstadt .

Leibniz calculating machines

During his time as chief engineer at the University of Hanover, Kopp constructed the so-called Hanoverian replica of Leibniz's four-species calculating machine as part of a research contract from the German Research Foundation , following a proposal from Professors Erwin Stein and Karl Popp . The - functioning - calculating machine was presented to the public for the first time in 2006 in a Leibniz exhibition in the orangery of the Herrenhausen Gardens .

Franz Otto Kopp also designed with Erwin Stein and constructed the binary four-species gear machine from 2005 to 2008 based on preliminary considerations by Leibniz , which can be seen in the Leibniz permanent exhibition in the glass pavilion on the ground floor of the Welfenschloss and most recently in 2012 during the Long Night of Science was demonstrated in Hanover.
