After his childhood in Hoppenrade / Lüdershagen in the Soviet occupation zone and his escape from the GDR , he initially lived in Lübeck .

In 1969 he passed his Abitur at the old grammar school in Flensburg and later studied economics at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . He worked in Hanover until his retirement.

Since 1978 he has been involved in the Hannover Homosexuality Action Group (HSH), which still exists today with a different composition and objectives.

In 1991 the Lower Saxony Minister of the Interior appointed him to the Lower Saxony Hardship Fund for aid to those persecuted by the Nazi regime in special emergencies .

Hoffschildt became known in 1992 for his book Olivia , in which he documents the history of homosexuals in Hanover. He is the initiator of the "Association for Research into the History of Homosexuals in Lower Saxony" (VEHN, see web links) and oversees the Hanover Gay and Lesbian Archive (SARCH), which documents the fate of thousands of persecuted homosexual men during the Nazi era. These documents have contributed to the setting of stumbling blocks for gays in several cities .

From the SARCH, Rainer Hoffschildt developed the central recording of gay discrimination according to case groups and different regions and countries, from which the ZEH documents were created (see publications ).

Rainer Hoffschildt has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Lower Saxony Memorial Foundation since 2005 .

Hoffschildt regularly contributes biographical data for the laying of stumbling blocks, especially for victims of homosexual persecution by the National Socialists , for example for the Hanover branch of the Ecumenical Working Group on Homosexuals and Churches (HuK).
