Franz Arthur Pahl (born November 15, 1949 in Taisten ) is a former member of the South Tyrolean parliament and a member of the South Tyrolean People's Party .

Life

education and profession

After attending the humanistic grammar school for ancient languages ​​(Greek and Latin), Pahl studied languages ​​(in addition to his mother tongue German, Italian, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese) and history at the universities of Venice , Verona and Padua . His thesis dealt with the topic The History of the South Tyrolean People's Party . Professionally he worked as a teacher.

politics

Pahl held his first political office from 1976 to 1979 as State Youth Secretary of the South Tyrolean People's Party . From 1983 to 2008 he was a member of the South Tyrolean state parliament and therefore also a member of the Trentino-South Tyrol regional council . During these years he served as Vice-President and Assessor in the regional government from 1994 to 1999, and as President of the Regional Council from 2001 to 2003 and from 2006 to 2008.

In the summer of 2008, Pahl protested unsuccessfully against the exhibition of the work First the Feet by Martin Kippenberger in the Bolzano Museion with a nine-day hunger strike . He then withdrew his candidacy in the state elections in 2008 and ended his political career.

journalism

Pahl held various journalistic functions in the course of his life. From 1979 to 1982 he was the editor of the weekly newspaper Der Tiroler and from 1984 to 1986 the editor of the Südtiroljournal . He also worked as an editor for Radio Südtirol from 1980 to 1983 and wrote a number of political contributions in the daily newspaper Dolomiten in 1997 and 1998 .

Humanitarian engagement

In 1991 Pahl began providing humanitarian aid to refugees from the Croatian war and the war in Bosnia that broke out a short time later , which he expanded after 1994 in his institutional role as Vice President of the regional government. He received several recognitions for his commitment:

  • 1996: Award of the Red Kneža Branimira s Orglicom (" Order of Prince Branimir with a chain ") by the Croatian President Franjo Tuđman on May 28, 1996 for humanitarian services to the refugees in the Croatian War (1991–1995)
  • 1997: Appointment as Honorary Senator of the University of Osijek ( Croatia ) on June 28, 1997
