Franz Philipp Freiherr von Elmpt (born October 3, 1724 in Dammerscheidt, † April 5, 1795 ) was an Imperial Lieutenant Field Marshal .

Life

family

Franz Philipp was a member of the Rhineland barons of Elmpt . His parents were the Elector Palatine captain Kaspar von Elmpt zu Dammerscheidt (1679-1730) and Agnes Isabella von Sieskern auf Dahl (1685-1737). The Russian field marshal Johann Martin von Elmpt (1726-1802) was his brother.

He married Maria Anna Karolina Schröffl von Mannsperg. The daughter Maria Anna, married to the imperial lieutenant colonel , chamberlain and heir to Czernowitz Vincenz Eusebius Zeszner Freiherr von Spitzenberg, emerged from the marriage. His only son died as an ensign in the “Brechainville” infantry regiment (No. 25) in the battle for the Veteran Cave in the Turkish War .

Career

Elmpt entered imperial military service in 1740 and advanced to captain until the outbreak of the Seven Years' War . He was a tranche major in 1757 and joined the General Staff in 1759 . At Kunersdorf and before Schweidnitz he was able to distinguish himself. On April 30, 1762, he received the Knight's Cross , the Military Maria Theresa Order, for his essential contribution to the conquest of the Schweidnitz Fortress . In 1768 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and headed the topographical survey of the country in the Banat. During the War of the Bavarian Succession , he was able to excel at Weißkirchen. After his promotion to major general in 1779, he became chief of the general staff and, as such, was in charge of the land acquisition of Hungary, Bohemia and Moravia . In 1785 Elmpt became the fortress commander of Prague, and in 1789 he was promoted to field marshal lieutenant. He had participated in all 16 campaigns between 1740 and 1779, including 36 battles and seven important sieges.
