Johann Martin Count of Elmpt ( Russian Иван Карпович Эльмпт * 13. September 1726 in Kleve , † January 29 . Jul / 10. February  1802 greg. In Switten ) was a Russian field marshal .

Life

family

Johann Martin was a member of the Rhineland barons of Elmpt . His parents were the Elector Palatine captain Kaspar von Elmpt zu Dammerscheidt (1679-1730) and Agnes Isabella von Sieskern auf Dahl (1685-1737). The imperial field marshal Franz Philipp von Elmpt (1724–1795) was his brother.

He married Dorothea Katharina Gottliebe von Korff in 1758 . The marriage had three children:

Career

Elmpt was first in French military service before joining the Russian army as a captain . In 1755 he was promoted to colonel and took part in the Seven Years War . He rose to brigadier in 1759 and major general in 1762 . From 1762 to 1769 he was Quartermaster General , receiving the Order of St. Anne in 1763 and serving with the 2nd Army since 1768. When the Russo-Turkish War broke out , he was awarded the Alexander Nevsky Order as Lieutenant General for an expedition to the Moldova region . In 1769 he was with the 1st Army. In the field of tension between the Confederation of Bar and the First Partition of Poland , he stayed with Russian troops in Poland from 1770 to 1772 . In 1772 he was commander of an observation corps on the Swedish border, and immediately afterwards commander of the Russian troops in Livonia and Ingermanland . Elmpt was General en chef from 1780 . In the Russo-Turkish War in 1787 he was commander of the 3rd Division , but was sent to Riga in 1788 due to illness . Under Paul I he became the commander of the Riga garrison , including the Livonian division. From 1796 to 1798 he was chief of the St. Petersburg Grenadier Regiment. When he was promoted to General Field Marshal in 1797, he also received the Order of St. Andrew . The following year he was awarded for reasons of age his farewell .

Elmpt was in possession of Burgau Castle , as well as hereditary lord on Lais (Livonia, Estonian district), Wahrenbrock and, since 1788, on Switten (both Courland ). Already in 1784 he received the Courland indigenous . His elevation to the rank of imperial count in 1790 was recognized by Russia in the same year. He is also said to have been Starost on Luschosno.
