Franz Remmel

Franz Karl Remmel (born September 5, 1931 in Periam , Kingdom of Romania ) is a Romanian-German journalist , ethnologist and writer .

Life

Franz Remmel, son of the sawmill owner and wood goods dealer Franz Remmel senior and Anna Antonia , née Jochmann , moved with his family to Transylvania after the expropriation of his father's business under communist rule . Here he studied education and journalism and worked there as a teacher until 1966. Then Remmel was the district correspondent of the newspaper Neuer Weg in Hunedoara ( German iron market ) and Timișoara ( German Timişoara ).   

In his literary works Remmel took up adventurous events from his homeland or took the reader to distant worlds. The author dealt mainly after 1990 intensively with the lives of Roma - minority in Romania and their recent history.

Honors

He has received several awards for his work in Roma research:

  • Honorary diploma from the International Research Society for Romology (Budapest, 2000),
  • two honorary diplomas from the royal family Ioan Cioabă (2000 and 2007)
  • "Ioan Cioabă" medal (Hermannstadt / Sibiu, 2001)
  • "Golden Honorary Diploma" of the International Scientific and Cultural Research Society for Romology (Budapest, 2010)
  • Golden Merit Pin of the Republic of Austria (2007)

For his book Bare Feet on Stony Roads. Remmel received support from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and from the Department for Inter-Ethnic Relations in Bucharest on the history of suffering of the Romanian Roma . The chairman of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania , Klaus Johannis , also rated this book positively. On March 7, 2007, Franz Remmel received from the Austrian Ambassador, Dr Dr. Franz Remmel, for his meritorious work as a Roma expert in Hunedoara. Christianzeileissen the Golden Merit Pin of the Republic of Austria . In his books and lectures he described the life of the gypsies and tried to break down clichés and prejudices.
