Franz Rupp (born February 24, 1901 in Schongau ; † May 27, 1992 in New York ) was a German-American pianist .

Life

Franz Rupp, son of Ludwig and Lina Rupp (née Gartner), was trained from 1916 to 1922 at the Academy of Music in Munich by August Schmid-Lindner , Friedrich Klose and Walter Courvoisier . The baritone Heinrich Rehkemper , who recognized his talent as a companion, recommended him to Michael Raucheisen . In 1920 Rupp undertook his first tour through the USA with the violinist Willy Burmester . From 1926 he lived in Berlin and made a name for himself as a concert accompanist in the 1930s. In 1930 he married the Warsaw-born opera singer Stephanie Schwarz. From 1927 to 1934 Rupp was the constant piano accompanist of the famous baritone Heinrich Schlusnus , until he was banned from performing in Germany because of his wife's Jewish descent. 1930-1938 he worked with Fritz Kreisler together, whom he accompanied on his 1935 tour of South America and in London all violin sonatas with him 1935-36 Beethoven for the record recorded. He also accompanied singers such as Lotte Lehmann , Sigrid Onégin , Maria Stader and Beniamino Gigli . He has also appeared as a soloist with various German orchestras and with the conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler . He was also valued as a chamber musician, organist and harpsichordist. He has given concerts with the violinist Georg Kulenkampff , the violist William Primrose and the cellist Emanuel Feuermann .

In 1938 he moved to New York, where he became Marian Anderson's piano accompanist in 1940 . The extraordinary musical partnership lasted until 1965, when Marian Anderson left the stage.

Rupp has also been a lecturer at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia since 1945 .

His last public appearance was as the accompanist of the violist Rivka Golani in 1985 at the Chamber Music Festival in Lockenhaus .

He lived in Manhattan and died of cancer at the age of 91.
