Friedrich Klose (born November 29, 1862 in Karlsruhe , † December 24, 1942 in Ruvigliana ) was a German composer and music teacher.

Life

Friedrich Klose was the son of Hauptmann in the General Staff Karl Klose (1818–1907). He maintained contact with Joseph Victor von Scheffel .

Klose was a student of Vinzenz Lachner and then studied with Anton Bruckner in Vienna . From 1906 to 1907 he taught at the Conservatory of Basel and was then as successor to Ludwig Thuille until 1919 composition teacher at the Academy of Music in Munich , where among his students were Max Butting , Wilhelm Petersen , Philippine Schick and Paul Ben-Haim . He then lived in Switzerland until his death . 1942 he was on the occasion of his 80th birthday from the University of Bern , the honorary doctorate awarded.

After 1918, Klose considered his musical oeuvre to be complete, no longer published any compositions and devoted himself to writing memory books.

Audio language

Friedrich Klose was a composer who was mainly inspired by non-musical models and succeeded the New German School . Richard Wagner and Hector Berlioz in particular provided strong impulses for his work, while the influences of his teacher Bruckner are rather sparse. Klose's works are characterized by intensive motivic work including thematic transformation techniques as well as dense contrapuntal composition and the resulting chromatically enriched harmony. His orchestral treatment is characterized by a great wealth of timbres.

Since he composed very slowly and carefully, the scope of Klose's catalog raisonné remained small. Most of the genres of music were only given a single, but always ambitious and weighty work.
