Vinzenz Lachner (born July 19, 1811 in Rain am Lech ; † January 22, 1893 in Karlsruhe ) was a German composer , conductor and music teacher.

Life

Vinzenz Lachner was born into a musical family. His father Anton was a watchmaker and organist in Rain, and he received his first music lessons from him. His brothers Franz and Ignaz and his stepbrother Theodor were also composers, the two sisters were active as organists.

From 1822 he attended high school in Augsburg , which he did not finish for unknown reasons. From 1830, following the intervention of his brother Franz, he worked as a music teacher with Count Mycielski zu Cosvitz in Posen . Vinzenz Lachner received his brother Ignaz's position at the Reformed Church and the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna in 1834 . In 1836 he went - now in succession to his brother Franz - as Kapellmeister at the National Theater in Mannheim and stayed there with short interruptions until his early retirement in 1873. In 1842 he worked as conductor of the German Opera Society in London , and in 1848 he took over for a short time the position of music director in Frankfurt am Main . After retiring from the office of conductor in Mannheim, Lachner moved to Karlsruhe. Here he worked initially as a private teacher, from 1884 as a music teacher at the Grand Ducal Baden Conservatory.

Among his contemporaries he was valued by Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann . Among his students in Mannheim was the conductor Hermann Levi , in Karlsruhe the pianist Max von Pauer .

His hometown Rain honors him with a street name, the Gebrüder Lachner Museum, which is housed in the house where he was born, and the name of the Gebrüder Lachner Middle School. In Karlsruhe and Mannheim streets were also named after Vinzenz Lachner.

The compositional work of Vinzenz Lachner, who was opposed to the New German School , mainly includes vocal works, especially songs , but also two symphonies as well as overtures and chamber music. He also wrote an incidental music for Schiller's Turandot . A festival overture and a piano quartet were awarded prizes. He has also earned the reputation of an outstanding conductor. With the exception of his comical male choirs, his works have largely been forgotten today.
