Franz Schupp (born November 3, 1936 in Vienna ; † April 11, 2016 ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic theologian and philosopher .

Live and act

After studies, ordination and two doctorates (Dr. theol. And Dr. phil.), Schupp was Professor of Dogmatics at the University of Innsbruck from 1971 to 1975, succeeding Karl Rahner . From 1976 to 1978 he worked at the Leibniz Archive in Hanover. In 1979 he took over a chair for philosophy at the University of Paderborn . In 2002 he retired.

In Innsbruck, Schupp made a name for himself with innovative contributions to theological discussion. As a dogmatist , he was in critical contact with Karl Rahner . The work Faith - Culture - Symbol (1974) is one of the most innovative drafts in the field of recent Catholic theology of the sacraments . During this time, Schupp was still a member of the Jesuit order . After a violent conflict because of the supposedly “actualistic” orientation of his thinking (Schupp viewed critical theory as the central challenge of contemporary theology), a break occurred in the mid-1970s. In 1974 his church license to teach was revoked.

After that, Schupp came out particularly with editions and comments on texts of logic from the 10th to 17th centuries. His specialties were medieval logic and the logic developed by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz . He became known to a larger readership through an overview of his history of philosophy , which was published by Felix Meiner Verlag in 2003 and which quickly became popular .

Franz Schupp died in April 2016 at the age of 79.
